It can be hard to find the perfect one-piece, but we’ve scoured the internet and asked insiders to bring you the best options—whether you’re heading to a local beach or just want to soak up the sun in a backyard swimming pool.

If you’ve never ordered swimwear online, now’s the time to start: not only is it safer than going to stores right now, but trying on suits in comfortable surroundings—and in good lighting—goes a long way toward making you feel comfortable. “Always order online. Spare yourself the florescent lighting nightmare,” says stylist Erin Busbee. “It’s no fun to stare at yourself in that 3-way mirror half-naked. It messes with your mind.”

Final Verdict

Taking top marks for sizing, fit, and style, The Mykonos from Andie Swim (view at Andie Swim) is a great pick for a cheery, beach-ready one-piece—and it’s available in a range of colorways and fabrics for any mood and style.

What to Look For in a One-Piece Swimsuit

Fit

Bathing suits typically run small but that’s for a reason—oftentimes when they get wet they become saggy. Look for a suit that fits snug but doesn't ride up when it's dry. As long as it's staying in place when you try it on, you should be good to go.

Price

How much you spend on your swimsuit should reflect how much you anticipate you’ll be wearing it. If sitting out by the pool or heading to the seaside are frequent activities during your free time, you might want to spend a little more to feel comfortable and confident in something you’re practically living in. Likewise, if your vacation plans tend to be more landlocked, you might want to look for a more affordable swimsuit that you can wear a couple of times over a season or two—but won’t get worn out from overly frequent washings.

Material

“Different brands have different combinations and percentages, but most of them include nylon and spandex,” says Busbee. The blend of these two makes an important difference when it comes to how the suit feels while wearing it: “The more spandex there is, the more ‘held in’ you’ll feel,” she adds. “You can find the fabric breakdown in the product description on most websites.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How should you wash a swimsuit?

“Swimsuits should be washed by hand in almost all cases, and always immediately rinsed before washing if you were just in chlorine,” says Kostis. “Make sure you always read the care instructions on the tag to keep that perfect suit looking fabulous. There’s nothing worse than finding the ideal suit and having it be ruined in the wash. When in doubt, hand wash in gentle detergent and lay flat to dry,” adds Busbee.

As far as drying it—don’t! “Lay flat or hang to dry and never put in the dryer,” Kostis says.

  • What types of swimsuits work best with your body shape?

Pear/Triangle: “For this shape I love something that is higher cut on the sides, full coverage in the back, and that has either a halter neck or thicker straps—giving an overall more balanced look and drawing attention upward,” says Kostis.

“If you are an inverted triangle with wider shoulders, a halter neck swimsuit is a no-brainer for softening the look of the shoulders. Asymmetrical necklines can also help, so look for swimsuits with one shoulder. Another option is capped sleeves,” adds Busbee.

Apple: “Choose a suit that has an interesting neckline, like a sweetheart or V, to shape and accentuate the chest area,” Kostis says. “Suits that are ruched through the center or even have an illusion detail on the sides is also a great way to go.”

Hourglass: Kostis recommends “A thin strap cutout or a belted tank-style one-piece is a great style for this body shape.”

Rectangle: “Choose a sporty, boy short style one-piece or something lower cut with a shoulder ruffle detail to give your shoulders and hips a more full appearance,” says Kostis.Look for embellishments to add definition at strategic points, too: “Cutouts, belts, or any strategic design details around the waist will also create more of a waistline,” adds Busbee.

Petites: “You can create the look of length with ruffles around the shoulders,” says Busbee. “Ruffles also create volume at the shoulders and in contrast, the look of a tinier waist. Lower rise bottoms will also help create more space.” Keep in mind your bottom half too: “High cut bottoms, also known as French cut bottoms are exactly what they sound like,” she adds. “They are cut higher on the legs, which makes your legs look longer.”
