Best Gore-Tex Road Running Shoes

These shoes are ideal if you primarily run on roads. They don’t have the traction for muddy trails, but they are amazing for roads when you need protection against rain and puddles.

Best Overall Gore-Tex Road Running Shoes

1. Brooks Ghost 14 GTX

The Brooks Ghost 14 GTX shoes are supremely well-constructed running shoes, and would still be an amazing choice even without the Gore-Tex waterproof layer. After all, the Ghost is, year-in, year-out, one of the most popular running shoes.

They’re available in both mens’ and womens’ versions, so every runner will be covered. Both Ghost versions do lack variety in the color and design department, but these shoes are all about keeping you comfortable and dry, and less about matching your outfit.

The Gore-Tex membrane in these running shoes keeps water from getting in, even if it does penetrate the outer mesh. The beauty of Gore-Tex is that it doesn’t sacrifice breathability for its waterproofing. In addition to the rain staying far from your feet in these shoes, they also won’t overheat while on your run.

Another super water-related feature of these shoes is the thick rubber sole. It provides superior grip in wet weather, and shallow puddles won’t even touch the mesh.

The foam insole is removable, and it’s easy to insert an orthotic if you need one – these shoes are of neutral support type. The Ghosts allow for customizable comfort, and with their soft lining and great cushioning, you’ll feel like you’re running on clouds. Dry, comfortable clouds.

PROS:

  • Contains a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane
  • Rubber sole increases waterproofing
  • Men’s and women’s versions
  • Removable foam insole for a custom fit

CONS:

  • Few color variations

Best Snug Fit Gore-Tex Shoe

2. ASICS Gel-Cumulus 21 G-TX

ASICS shoes are designed around the idea that a snug fit is important for a comfortable and efficient run. Shoes that are too loose can hamper a runner’s ability to be sleek and speedy on the road. That’s why we’ve chosen these as our best Gore-Tex running shoes that have a snug fit.

They’re available in both mens’ and womens’ shoes, so nobody misses out! There’s not much color option, but with these on your feet you won’t be thinking about appearance. The Gore-Tex layer and molded blown rubber heel plug are effective protection against most harsh weather. These shoes are built for comfort and safety, and they don’t disappoint.

They’re cushioned with FlyteFoam, which is lightweight, has a high energy return, and offers both support and bounce. Another of the things we love about Gel-Cumulus is the addition of ASICS’ Impact Guidance System technology. This helps to keep you running with your natural gait, ensuring a more natural and comfortable run.

The sockliner is removable, which is helpful if you need an even snugger fit. You don’t want to go too tight, though – these shoes are snug by design, so make sure to order slightly up.

PROS:

  • Mens’ and womens’ versions available
  • Employs ASICS’ Impact Guidance System technology
  • Great shock-absorbency thanks to FlyteFoam
  • We like the reflective detail for added safety in low light

CONS:

  • Runs small, so order a little larger

Best Stability Gore-Tex Shoe

3. ASICS GT-2000 8 G-TX

Stability running shoes are aimed at the overpronators among us. Not sure if this is you or not? Here’s a quick test – if your running shoes are more worn out on the inside heel and have an inward tilt when viewed from the back, then you’re probably overpronating.

There’s nothing wrong with your natural gait as long as you choose a pair of running shoes that works with you. The ASICS GT-2000 are our choice for the best Gore-Tex running shoes aimed specifically at overpronators.

The Gore-Tex upper keeps water out and lets your feet breathe at the same time, so you won’t have to waste time worrying about the safety of your feet.

These shoes make use of various technologies to keep overpronated feet stable and sturdy on the road. The FlyteFoam midsole tech is designed to prevent the usual flattening that happens in a worn shoe, effectively reducing wear and tear on specific spots of the sole.

Gel technology in both the front and the heel absorb shock and allow the foot to move more naturally. Their DuoMax technology aims to reduce the weight of the shoe without compromising stability. So what you end up with is a lightweight, stable, shock-absorbing shoe that effectively counters the wear and tear of overpronation.

And of course, they keep your feet impressively dry thanks to the addition of Gore-Tex water-resistant material. What’s not to love?

PROS:

  • Great for overpronators
  • Gore-Tex upper and thick rubber sole
  • Gel technology cushioning system
  • Various integrated technologies to keep feet supported correctly

CONS:

  • Some runners may find them quite stiff
  • Those who aren’t overpronators may find them uncomfortable

Best Gore-Tex Trail Running Shoes

When you primarily run on trail, you want a beefy shoe with great traction and a durable upper. For wet and snowy weather, these Gore-Tex models will help keep your feet dry.

Best Overall Gore-Tex Trail

4. Salomon Speedcross 5 GTX

It can generally be assumed that trail running is messier than road running. Mud and creek crossings are standard fare when you’re off-road. But that doesn’t mean you love wet feet any more than the rest of us. If you love hitting the trails but hate getting your feet wet, then you may want to look at getting yourself a pair of trail running shoes with integrated Gore-Tex fabric.

Trail running requires a hardcore shoe, and that’s exactly what the Speedcross is. They’re designed to be rugged but not bulky, and the addition of Gore-Tex technology in this shoe means you’ll never be caught out in bad weather.

One of the stand-out features of this shoe is the superior grip on the sole. The Contagrip is designed with deeper lugs that dig into the surface, preventing slips and tumbles.

We also love Saloman’s Quicklace system, which eliminates flapping laces. It’s easy to get a great, tight fit that’s sustained throughout your run.

The Gore-Tex means you can run through mud, water, rain, and snow and not feel an ounce of moisture on your feet. Not even your own sweat, because these shoes are as breathable as they are waterproof.

If you’re an avid trail runner, you’ll find these shoes to be a worthy companion on the trails.

PROS:

  • Grippy rubber sole for extra stability
  • Offers complete weather protection
  • Unique and useful Quicklace adjustment
  • We love the rugged design for on the trails

CONS:

  • Runners with wide feet may struggle to find a good fit

Best Runner-Up Gore-Tex Trail

5. Salomon Alphacross GTX

If you prefer a less rugged-looking trail running shoe, this offering from Salomon should do the trick while still providing superior traction and cushioning.

There are a few differences between this shoe and our first place trail running shoe. One thing that hasn’t changed is the Gore-Tex waterproofing. These running shoes may get wet while you’re out and about, but your feet sure won’t.

Another classic Salomon feature is the premium rubber grip. While not as deep and claw-like as the previous option, the Contagrip outsole still provides impressive traction in any weather.

What is different are the laces. These shoes use a more traditional lacing system, which may be preferred by some, while others may miss the unique Salomon Quicklace system.

These shoes seem to run slightly narrow, so runners with wider feet may need to try another shoe.

PROS:

  • Some runners may prefer this lace-up system
  • Aggressive grip for extra safety on the trails
  • EVA midsole for cushioning and comfort
  • Great for trail runners who prefer a less rugged shoe

CONS:

  • Some customers complain of the shoes being too narrow for their feet

Best Wide Gore-Tex Trail Shoe

6. New Balance Summit K.O.M.

New Balance has a good reputation on both road and trail. As we’ve seen, it can be harder for runners with wide feet to find a nicely fitting pair of trail running shoes. This offering is not only a super trail shoe, but it’s made to suit feet of all sizes.

We love the stylish design of these shoes, which is really just a bonus on top of their features. The rubber sole offers proper grip in both dry and wet weather, so you can be assured of safety when running on rough terrain.

There’s less mesh on these than others, which only enhances the Gore-Tex’s waterproofing. As well as being weatherproof, they’re also extremely comfortable. The shoes feature a Rock Stop plate in the front of the shoe to protect from debris, and memory foam cushioning and a removable insert.

PROS:

  • Great for trail runners who have wide feet
  • Removable insert for customizable fit
  • We love the stylish design
  • Impressive padding and comfort

CONS:

  • Be careful not to accidentally order the regular/narrow instead of wide

Top Wide Toe Box

7. Altra Lone Peak 7

The Altra Lone Peaks are some of the most hardcore-looking shoes around. One of their most useful features, and something their design caters specifically for, is a wide toe box.

Some runners either need or prefer more space around their toes. If this sounds like you, the Altra Lone Peak could be the perfect shoe for you.

That’s not the only reason you should buy them, though. These Altras are made to beat bad weather. Although they’re on our list for best Gore-Tex running shoes, they actually use something called eVent, which is slightly different but still makes the shoe waterproof.

The Altras employ their own TrailClaw grip technology, which allows you to move freely and safely across all terrain. The dual-layer cushioning molds to your foot to keep it stable and steady while on the rocks and trails.

PROS:

  • Wide toe box for enhanced comfort
  • TrailClaw technology increases grip
  • Fully waterproof and weatherproof
  • Dual-layer EVA cushioning

CONS:

  • May not be comfy for runners who don’t specifically need a wider toe box

Best Brooks Gore-Tex Trail Shoe

8. Brooks Cascadia 14 GTX

If Brooks is your brand, these could be the best Gore-Tex running shoes for you to hit the trails with. They’re sturdy in design and appearance, and weatherproof to a high degree.

The combination of tightly woven mesh and Gore-Tex material makes them impervious to water from the outside, but still super breathable. Another feature we appreciate is the 3D Rubber Print MudGuard. The trails can be a dirty place, so extra protection from debris and dirt is always helpful.

They’re quite supportive, with a midfoot saddle and lightweight but flexible cushioning. These shoes are neutral, and the padded collar and tongue add an extra element of comfort and cushioning in places we often neglect.

And after a hard day on the trails, the heel pull tab is always a great addition to help remove them quickly, easily, and with minimal fuss!

PROS:

  • Tight mesh upper with Gore-Tex membrane for breathability
  • 3D Rubber Print mudguard for protection against dirt and debris
  • Neutral support
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole is environmentally-friendly

CONS:

  • Some report them running narrow in the toe box

Most Cushioned Gore-Tex Shoe

9. Hoka Speedgoat 4 Gore-Tex

Cushioning should never be undervalued when it comes to running shoes. This Hoka shoe was inspired by Karl Meltzer, an endurance runner, who understands just how crucial great cloud-like cushioning is.

These offer “balanced, modest cushioning” in all the right places to reduce muscle fatigue while running. The foam midsole is soft and responsive, for shock-absorbency on the go.

They’re also very supportive, with strategically-placed 5mm rubber lugs across the sole for extra stability. A traditional lacing system allows for a custom tightening fit. The Gore-Tex bootie keeps liquid out, while the mesh upper ensures that your feet don’t get too sweaty in there.

According to Hoka, these shoes feature a wider forefoot for added comfort for the wide-footed. The only downside is that the sewn-in tongue may be uncomfortable for some, and makes it hard to get the shoe on. Getting it off is easy with the heel tab!

PROS:

  • Great support from the thick rubber sole
  • Gore-Tex waterproof inner bootie for all weather
  • Good grip on both uphill and downhill
  • Wide forefoot should make these comfy for most

CONS:

  • The sewn-in tongue may be uncomfortable for some

Best Gore-Tex Hiking Shoes For Men

10. adidas Terrex Swift R2 Gore-Tex Hiking Shoes

Gore-Tex technology really shines on hikes. These men’s hiking shoes from Adidas don’t look like your traditional hiking shoes, but they get the job done admirably while looking suitably stylish.

They fulfill all the requirements of a high-quality, safe, and durable hiking shoe. The mesh upper is made of Ripstop fabric, which should last for ages even up against debris and rocks on regular hikes.

Extra reinforcement comes in the form of TPU overlays, which encase the foot and keep it stable in its position. Your toes get extra protection too from a molded toe cap that’s resistant to hazards on the trails.

A speed lacing system is always a helpful feature, although it may not be as durable as thicker, traditional laces.

These hiking shoes will not only keep your feet safe from the elements. They’ll shield them from the harshness of the trails, too. They’re worthwhile having on your feet if you hike often.

PROS:

  • Durable Ripstop mesh upper
  • TPU overlays for extra stability
  • Molded toe cap for protection against stubbing
  • We appreciate the speed lacing system

CONS:

  • The lacing system may not be as durable as others

Best Gore-Tex Hiking Shoes For Women

11. Merrell Moab 2 GORE-TEX

This offering is a supremely well-rounded shoe. It grabs a spot on our list for best Gore-Tex running shoes for women who like to both hike and run.

The Merrel Moabs have a rugged-looking design that’s available in six colors. Regardless of the style you prefer, you’ll get some impressive features when purchasing this shoe.

An attractive synthetic leather and mesh upper is eye-catching as well as protective. It also adds to the waterproofing, which is aided by the additional Gore-Tex material. You could hike anywhere in these and come back with dry feet.

They’re designed for extreme comfort and offer a number of features to make that happen. A blended EVA footbed is created with special arch and heel support. Air cushioning in the heel improves shock absorption. A padded tongue and collar provide cushioning from every angle.

The tough Vibram outsole and nylon arch shank add an extra element of support for traversing those mountain trails.

If that’s not enough to make you choose these as the best Gore-Tex running shoes for hiking, Merrell takes sustainability seriously and strives to create sustainable products. Saving runners’ feet and saving the planet – what more could we ask for?

PROS:

  • Six colors available
  • Rubber toe cap for extra protection

FAQs

If you’re hearing about Gore-Tex for the first time, here are the ins and outs of it and the most frequently asked questions we come across.

What Are Gore-Tex Running Shoes?

Gore-Tex running shoes differ from normal shoes in that they have built-in waterproofing components. Gore-Tex is a water-resistant fabric, so Gore-Tex running shoes contain a layer of this specialized material as well as other weather-proofing elements, like a bellowed tongue or thermal insulation.

Why Is Gore-Tex So Good?

Gore-Tex has been around since 1969. It’s well-known as a water-resistant but breathable fabric that’s utilized in performance wear to keep athletes as cool and dry as possible while they’re performing in their sport.

Unlike other “waterproof” textiles, Gore-Tex prevents rain and splashes getting in, but still allows moisture to escape. This is quite unusual, but highly useful. Runners’ feet will stay as dry as possible from both inside and out, as perspiration escapes and no form of water gets in.

Is Gore-Tex 100% Waterproof?

The short answer is that some of it is, and some of it isn’t. Gore-Tex offers two different ranges of products – waterproof, and non-waterproof.

Many running shoe brands use a few layers of Gore-Tex. If you aren’t buying directly from the Gore-Tex website, it can be difficult to tell if you’re getting a truly waterproof shoe, or simply a water-resistant one.

The word “waterproof” can be a bit of a tough one to use correctly. There are three generally used terms to describe a shoe’s ability to deal with water:

  • Water-resistant
  • Water-repellent
  • And waterproof

These are often used interchangeably when describing running shoes, but sometimes they don’t get them quite right. Let’s take a deeper look.

Water-Resistant

This is the most common type of shoe. It has properties aimed at keeping your feet dry.

As the name suggests, water-resistant shoes resist liquid, but if there’s a high enough volume of it, some of it is likely to come through the shoe fabric.

Often, these types of shoes are made in a layered style, mixing water-resistant material with other, breathable materials.

Water-Repellent

Water-repellent is quite similar to water-resistant. The materials repel water to a certain degree, but when inundated with a large quantity of liquid, will most likely be breached.

Waterproof

Waterproof is the ultimate solution when it comes to keeping water out. A waterproof shoe is encased in a membrane that is not porous, so water can’t penetrate it at all. A good example of a waterproof material is rubber, so things like gumboots would fall into this category.

Gore-Tex has two distinct product ranges, one of which they state is properly waterproof and one of which is simply water-resistant.

Regardless of which Gore-Tex fabric you end up with, you should notice an improvement over other materials. Both their variations are water-resistant to a high degree, windproof, and breathable. This makes for a much dryer, comfier experience than other shoes, especially if you’re likely to be running in heavy weather often.

One other important factor to note is that while Gore-Tex prevents water from entering the outside of the shoe, water can still enter through the opening by your ankles. It’s this reason that trail gaiters are often recommended for snowy conditions.
